Nyack HS Fashion Show Accents Local Threads

Teachers, parents raise money for project graduation

With Nyack teachers as models on the catwalk and parents as spectators, Thursday evening's annual Nyack High School Fashion Show went off without a sartorial hitch.

The event—held at the Pearl River Hilton—drew hundreds of eager Nyackers and fashion-gawkers.

Now on its 19th year, the fashion show raises funds for Project Graduation.

"It's a national initiative that provides seniors with safe ways to celebrate on graduation night," said Laurie Straus, co-president of the PTSA executive board, which organized the event. Straus has had a major hand in the fashion show for five years.

"We try to support the community," she added, noting all the clothes featured on the runway are local, and provided by , P. Ross, , Sanctuary and .

Proceeds also fund scholarships—since the first fashion show in 1993, about $34,000 worth of aid has been dished out to deserving students.

Audience members could win raffle prizes, as well, like brunch at Gourmet, tickets to or a donut-and-coffee tasting at .

School board members and district administrators were present, and principal Joe Spero and assistant principal Rudy Arietta——received rousing applause from parents when introduced.

Nyack teachers modeled everything from gowns to yoga pants—browse the adjacent gallery for a quick look, and add your own photos, too.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.
