Bill Fortune Memorial 10K/5K Runs To Benefit Meals on Wheels

The second annual Bill Fortune Memorial 10K and 5K is set for Sunday, May 20, at Rockland Lake State Park, with the race proceeds to benefit Meals on Wheels Programs & Services of Rockland.

More than 300 runners are expected to participate in the races, sponsored by the Rockland Road Runners. The 5K is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 10K at 8:45 a.m. Check-in is from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. Meals on Wheels is sponsoring a concurrent “Walk Away Hunger” 5K Walk, starting at 8:50 a.m.

The entry fee for the 5K or 10K run before May 17 is $25 for Rockland Road Runners members and $30 for nonmembers. After May 17 and on race day, the entry fee is $40 for all participants. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in the 10K and 5K runs in the following age categories: 19-or-younger, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70-or-older. The entry fee for the 5K walk is $25 before May 17, $35 after May 17 and on race day.

Bill Fortune was a Rockland Road Runners club member who attained national and international prominence during a 25-year racing career as a masters runner (age 40 or older). He died in 2010 at age 81.

The Rockland Road Runners club is the county’s largest running organization. Last year the club raised more than $80,000 for local charities such as People to People, Meals on Wheels, Rockland Family Shelter, United Hospice of Rockland, the Marisa Fund, and local fire departments and ambulance corps.
