Piermont: Historic District to be Dedicated

Piermont Historical Society to host ceremony for Rockland Road Bridge

Piermont's newest historical district will receive a special ceremony later this spring.

The Piermont Historical Society will be dedicating the Rockland Road Bridge Historic District June 9 at a public ceremony. Two new signs will mark the area, which includes the small span, nine buildings and seven sites.

Rockland Road Bridge was built in 1874 across Sparkill Creek, and is the only remaining stone-and-brick arched crossing of its type in the county today. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

"Unfortunately, time has not been a friend to the bridge, and this valuable and irreplaceable structure is in dire need of restoration," said Richard Esnard of the the Historical Society. "[We] hope to draw public awareness to this district rallying support for raising the needed funds for the bridge's rescue."
