Nyack's has an eventful two months ahead—February and March are slated to host play competitions, photography classes and more.

Two On The Aisle, A One Act Play Competition $100 Prize!

  • Plays will be selected by a panel of performing arts professionals. Selected play(s) will be given a workshop style showcase of two performances at the Edward Hopper House Art Center. All submitted plays will receive notes from the jurors. Plays can address any topic or theme but must meet the criteria and follow instructions listed in the guidelines. We are looking for playwrights at all stages of development, both professionals and pre-professionals. $100 prize awarded to the top play!

Three Things You Didn't Know About Edward Hopper

  • A presentation by exhibiting artist, Philip Koch
  • Saturday, March 31, 7 PM
  • Since 1983 Philip Koch has had thirteen residencies in Hopper's Cape Cod painting studio in S. Truro, Massachusetts.  In this presentation, Koch will present photographs he took of Hopper's Truro studio and a selection of the paintings Hopper made there. He will give clues to the mysteriously wide appeal of Hopper's art.  Philip Koch is a senior Professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

EXHIBITIONS

Edward Hopper At Home: Selections from the Arthayer R. Hopper Collection Trust

  • Ongoing through April 2012
  • Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was born and raised in this house and it remained his primary residence until he rented his first studio in New York City at the age of 28.  Growing up in this house and absorbing the distinct features of the surrounding area provided a rich source of inspiration for the young Hopper.  This intimate display of art and memorabilia reveals some of those early sources of inspiration that would remain central to his art throughout his career. 

 

Singular Visions/Multiple Views

  • A group show by current members of the SUNY Rockland Community College Art Department
  • February 11- March 25, 2012
    Opening Reception: Saturday, February 11, 2012, 5-7 PM
     
  • Curator: Lena Huyn
  • A collection of works based on the theme of environment and work inspired by the elements.  This exhibit honors and celebrates the RCC Art Faculty and their many achievements as both teachers and professional artists.  It also highlights the RCC Art Faculty’s inestimable contribution to art, education and cultural enrichment for the College community and residents of the County. 
  • The RCC Art Faculty is comprised of painters, sculptors, graphic designers, illustrators, art historians, photographers, a photojournalist, photohistorian, ceramicist, jeweler and fashion designer.  Members of the Art Faculty have exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally at major museums and art galleries; and are represented in prestigious public and private collections.

 

Max Greis: Allegory & Fantasy in Nature

  • Working in collage, painting, and video, Max Greis captures the changing world and altered reality that results from destructive forces like war and global warming.  

 

Inside Edward Hopper's Truro Studio: Paintings by Philip Koch

  • March 31-May 13, 2012
  • Running concurrently with Max Greis, in our rotating hallway gallery.
    As a young artist, Philip Koch was inspired from painting abstractions to working in a realist direction after seeing the art of Edward Hopper.  Since 1983 Koch has had thirteen residencies in Hopper's Cape Cod painting studio in S. Truro, Massachusetts. On display is a selection of paintings of the interior of the Cape Cod Hopper studio Koch painted on location.

WORKSHOPS

Art Lives! Youth Theatre Workshop

  • 4 Week Program. Thursday March 22, 29, April 5, 19, 2012, 4:30-6:30 PM 
  • This beginner/intermediate level acting course is great for students new to acting or who have caught the bug and want to explore the performing arts further!  Students will have the opportunity to improvise, work on scenes, monologues, and explore on camera and commercial work! 
  • Instructor: Rachael Solomon, current co-producer of the D.I.C.E Theatre Company, has directed numerous children's productions and has taught theatre arts through the collegiate level. 
  • Fee: $100 Non-members, $80 Members.

 

Art Off The Canvas Series (AOC)

  • Art is for everyone!  Art Off The Canvas is a series of monthly workshops that will explore art outside of the traditional realm, this includes but is not limited to, interior, floral, fashion and graphic design.
  • Sign up for all classes and receive a discount or register individually.

 

March AOC Workshop: Crash Course Camera & Photography Class

  • Meets 4 Saturdays: March 17, 24, 31 & April 7, 3-5PM
  • Want to take your photos to the next level? This 4 week course will cover all the fundamentals of digital photography like aperture, shutter speed and ISO and how you can use these elements to achieve your desired image.  Explore the concepts of lighting, angle, emotion and composition as you shoot on location and then further develop your new photography chops by learning basic photoshop techniques that will really enhance your images.  You may use a digital SLR or point & shoot camera.
  •  Instructor: Ken Karlewicz.
  •  Fee: $40 a class for non-members, $35 a class members (total of $160 for non-members, $140 members).

 

Crash Course Camera & Photography Class

  • For kids ages 12-17
     
  • Saturday, March 10 & Sunday, March 11, 3-5PM
  • This weekend intensive is perfect for kids interested in photography and who want to learn more! Students will discuss the basics elements of good photography exploring the concepts of lighting, angle, emotion and composition and how basic camera functions like Aperture and shutter speed effect their final image. Students will get the opportunity to go out and shoot the Nyack downtown area finding new perspectives, inspiration and light.  They will then learn basic Photoshop techniques and how they can use these to enhance their images.  You may use a digital SLR or point & shoot camera. 
     
  • Instructor: Ken Karlewicz.
  • Fee: $25 a class non-members, $20 a class members (total of $50 non-member, $40 member). 

 

April AOC Workshop: The Wonder of Spring’s Emergence: Floral Design

  • All skill levels
  • April 14, 2012, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
  • Create a colorful garden of fresh flowers that you can bring home!  Using a myriad of spring flowers and flowering branches, students will learn the characteristics of a “vegetative” style floral arrangement, perfect for ushering in the spring season. You are welcome, but not required to use your own container, medium sized (6” – 8”) vessel that holds water.  Please bring a sharp pair of snips and a pair of wood cutters.
  • Instructor: Ken Norman, Jr., AIFD is a third generation florist.  He works at his family’s retail florist, Colony Florist and Gifts, in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.  Mr. Norman is a FTD Master Designer and he is an award winning designer whose work has been published in numerous magazines. He is an instructor at the prestigious New York Botanical Garden. 
  • Fee: $25 Non-members, $20 Members, Plus $30 Materials fees.  Take Home Arrangement retails for $75.

ONGOING PROGRAMS

 

Acting 101 for young adults and adults

  • Groups Sessions Meet Every Thursday Beginning in February, 6-7 PM                                                                                    
  • Individual Sessions are set up separately                                                                          
  • These sessions are tailored to each student's individual interests in the performing arts, whether it is theatre, film, commercial work or those working on a specific project or preparing for an audition.  Students will receive help selecting and learning how to approach material, work with sides and cold readings, resume and headshot help, and industry guidance.  Students can sign up for group or individual sessions.  Both individual and group lessons are available.  Contact Hopper House for more information. 


Private Art Instruction

  • We offer individual or group instruction in numerous mediums in the fine arts, including but not limited to drawing, painting, and watercolor.  These sessions can be arranged to suit your schedule.  For more information please contact Hopper House.

Please note our gallery hours: Thursday-Sunday, 1-5pm or by appointment.  Admission is $5 adults, $3 Seniors; Free for members, students and children. Docent guided tours can be arranged for an additional fee.
