Tenement Museum Day Trip and Walking Tour of Lower East Side on June 15 with Historical Society of the Nyacks

A guided tour of restored homes in The Tenement Museum of New York, plus a neighborhood walking tour of the Lower East Side, is being presented by the Historical Society of the Nyacks on Wednesday, June 15.

The museum tour, “Getting By,” shows how immigrants weathered hard times at 97 Orchard Street from 1863 to 1935.  We will see the restored homes of a German-Jewish family who lived through the Panic of 1873, and an Italian-Catholic family who survived the Great Depression.

Also available is a continuous media presentation that depicts the life conditions of the immigrants and shows clips of an interview with a previous tenant.  There will be time to visit the gift store, as well as interesting small shops in the area.

The neighborhood walking tour will focus on the trends that shaped the Lower East Side from 1935 to the present, with stops along the way at bodegas, parks, settlement houses  and churches.  We will not enter the buildings.

The coach will leave from curbside, 507 North Broadway in Upper Nyack, promptly at 8:15 a.m., to return at 4 p.m. Lunch will be on your own, but we will provide suggestions.  The building tour is not handicapped-accessible.

Please send a check for $50 for members, $55 for non-members to the Historical Society of the Nyacks, P.O. Box 850, Nyack, NY 10960. Provide your contact information, including phone numbers. This price includes coach transportation, museum admission and both tours.  Signup deadline is May 15, and is subject to availability.
