STAC switches schedule

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team, coming off a 5-1 loss to Dowling, has rescheduled its weekend games.

The Spartans (24-13 all told and 9-4 East Coast Conference), travel to Bridgeport, CT, today for an ECC game at Harbor Yard at 3:30 p.m. that was originally set for Sunday.

STAC returns to Provident Bank Park in Pomona on Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Bridgeport, and will not play on Sunday.

In the Dowling setback, ECC rookie of the week Stanley Susana of the Bronx went 3 for 4, but the Golden Lions (23-13, 12-4) pulled away for their seventh win in the last eight games after a pitcher’s duel between Mark Rutledge and the Spartans’ Joe Ferrara.

STAC broke on top in the fourth inning when Susana singled to drive in George Wargo of West Haverstraw, but in the bottom of the seventh Ferrara, of Congers, suddenly lost his control, hitting two batters and throwing a wild pitch to lose his second game of the season.

Wargo is batting .327, with Frank Salerno of New City continuing to lead the way at .382 followed by Susana at .362. Nicholas Barbalato of Mahopac is hitting .323.

Matt Marotta of Suffern is pitching to a 1.79 ERA while Joe DePool of New City has a very-fine 2.86.

The Red Storm and Bearcats continue the series on Saturday at 4 p.m., and conclude with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.

Helping the Red Storm charge has been middle infielder Anthony Iacomini of North Salem, outfielder Jimmy Brennan of Airmont, and southpaw pitcher Sean Hagan of Larchmont.

Swan song for Jaspers

The Manhattan College women’s lacrosse team lost to Iona College, 12-6, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, marking the end of the collegiate careers of seniors Elizabeth Dugan and Chrissy Gutenberger, both of Stony Point, and BrieAnna Spatarella of Rocky Point.

The loss ended the Jaspers’ regular season at 4-10 and 2-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference while the Gaels improved to 9-6 and 3-2 in the MAAC.

Kelsey Rehain of Suffern had a goal on just three shots for Manhattan.

Junior Brittney Mabus of Yorktown Heights had two points for the Gaels, who conclude their regular season on Saturday afternoon at noon against Canisius at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle. Prior to the start, the Gaels will recognize their five graduating members of the Class of 2012, including defender Kelsey Sickles of Yorktown.

Mortarboard musings

  • The Dominican College softball team—which hosts powerful Caldwell (NJ) College (35-10) today in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and then hosts Philadelphia University (11-29) on Saturday for another twin-bill at noon--has moved up to seventh in the NCAA East Region Division II poll.  The Chargers are 30-14 overall, and a remarkable 21-1 in the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC). Pitcher/outfielder Delaney Childers leads the Chargers with a .417 batting average and a meager 0.67 ERA in the circle. Junior catcher Ashley Corrao of Staten Island is battling .408.
