Tappan Zee Falls in States

Class A Boys Basketball:

Tappan Zee shocked everyone when the Dutchmen defeated the much bigger Jamesville-Dewitt team on Friday 55-46, but the quest for a state title came up short as the team fell in the Class A Championship on Sunday to Harborfields 77-66.

In the defeat Pat Peterson led the team with 20 points and Joe Leitzia added 14 as the Dutchmen end the year 25-1.

College Sports Notebook:

Mortarboard musings

  • Senior right-hander Matt Marotta of Suffern tossed eight strong innings, allowing just two earned runs, to earn the win as the St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team defeated Southern New Hampshire, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at Provident Bank Park (PBP) in Pomona. The Spartans were outgunned in the nightcap, falling 12-1 as SNHU took three of the four games in the weekend. STAC (ranked No. 8 in the East Region NBCWA poll) stands at 11-7 overall while the Penmen (top-ranked in the region) are 16-2. Infielder Frank Salerno of New City and Clarkstown South had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 12 games for the Spartans, who return to Provident Bank Park on Wednesday when they host rival Dominican College at 3 p.m. Then travel to Caldwell (NJ) College on Thursday, before returning home to begin their East Coast Conference schedule with a twin-bill against Dowling College at PBP on Saturday, with the first pitch set for noon.
