College Sports Notebook:

Weather Throws a Changeup

The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament play-in game featuring Dominican and Caldwell, which was scheduled on Monday, has been reset for today at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Orangeburg.

Nyack College was to meet Bloomfield (NJ) College on Monday but that CACC tournament game, too, has been rescheduled for today at 2 p.m. at West Side Park in Newark.

The respective winners advance to the double-elimination phase of the tournament, scheduled Thursday through Saturday at Wilmington University in Delaware.

Rock, Scarinci Spark Jaspers

Joe Rock of Carmel had three hits including a homer and three RBI, and freshman pitcher Mike Scarinci of Nanuet and Pearl River HS was solid in relief as the Manhattan College baseball team defeated host Fairfield University 8-5.

Junior catcher Ramon Ortega of Miami, FL, also homered to help the Jaspers climb to 21-25, 9-9 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Scarinci and closer Jacob Marchus of Miami, FL, preserved the victory for senior right-hander Taylor Sewitt of Highland Mills, who improved to 6-1.

Manhattan returns to Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale for its final six games of the season beginning on Saturday when the Jaspers host Saint Peter’s for a doubleheader at noon.

The Jaspers are undefeated in 12 home games this season.

Mortarboard musings

  • Rockland Community College golfer Colby Lewis of Monroe was named the most valuable player in the Mid-Hudson Conference. Also named to the first-team were teammates Daniel Gizzi of Stony Point, Albertus Magnus alum Terrence Michalek and Mike Cavanagh of Garnerville, and New Rochelle’s Anthony Siguil of Westchester CC.
