Local, Professional Sports Stun This Weekend

We just witnessed a great sports weekend both in high school and professionally.

The weekend was also phenomenal for local fans who were interested in the pros, as the Knicks finally got back on track with two wins in Washington and Detroit and the Giants cruised passed the Falcons 24-2.

The final game of the NFL’s Wild Card Weekend was the best of them all as the Denver Broncos beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first overtime game in the playoffs under the new rules. The Broncos were led by controversial quarterback Tim Tebow and we have all seen the skit on Saturday Night Live and read about the former Gator but one thing is for sure; the man’s competitive fire can help heat the city of Denver throughout the winter.

Tebow threw for two touchdowns and 316 yards yesterday which is undoubtedly a great day but it should be noted that the number ‘316’ has its own special place in sports and religious history.

3:16 is a passage in the bible that has been referenced on signs and shirts at sporting arenas for decades now. We all know that Tebow’s faith is always referenced when his football skills are discussed but he himself has worn this passage on his eyes during college games.

The passage reads:

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

The Broncos seems to be imperishable this season as Tebow is now 8-4 since taking over as starter.

Next week the Broncos will head into New England while the Giants will kick off in Green Bay. Both the Patriots and Packers will be the favorites but the way the Giants and the Broncos are playing right now I wouldn’t be shocked to see Eli and Tebow advancing after next weekend.

Dominican charges to memorable victory

The Dominican College men’s basketball team closed out the sixth annual James Clancy Memorial Tournament with a 55-52 victory over Queens on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg.

Dominican went 2-0; in the consolation game, Dowling College defeated Post University, 63-57, behind a 17-point effort by Michael Hill.

The Chargers led by as many as seven points three times during the first period.   A layup by center Cory Quimby of Otisville, who had the game’s only double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, put Dominican ahead 22-15 with 4:59 to go and the host held on to a 23-22 advantage at the break.

The Knights came back in the second half and held a 48-44 lead with 5:01 left in regulation, but the Chargers charged back with an 8-2 run with four points coming from Quimby and four from Leon Porter II of Laurel, MD, to re-claim a 52-50 lead with 1:14 on the clock.

Queens tied the score at 52-52 on two free throws with 46 second left, but sophomore guard Khaleev Ginyard of Brentwood hit the game-winning 3 off a pass from Johhathan Brown of Central Islip for the final.

Brown finished with seven points, while Porter had a team leading five assists in the victory.

The Chargers (8-4) are back in action on Jan. 18 when Coach Joe Clinton’s club travels to Bronxville for a game at 7 p.m. against Concordia College.

Highlights: Clarkstown’s Samantha Haber won the Class 1 all around title with a score of 35.5. Haber’s best event of the day was a 9.7 in the floor exercise.

Game: Clarkstown vs. Lakeland/Panas

Score: Clarkstown Won 5-1

Highlights: Mitch LeSueur, Brett Chase, Mike Gillespie, Austin Vanderlinden, and Mike Taussi each scored a goal in the win against Lakeland/Panas.

Sport: Boys Basketball (Friday)

Game: Suffern vs. Clarkstown South

Score: Clarkstown South Won 69-35

Highlights: Mike McCahey led the way for South with 19 points and 11 rebounds, the senior also added five rebounds and six assists in the victory. Conor McGuinness added 10 points in the victory. Suffern was led by Rich Ibsen with 19 points.

Sport: Girls Basketball (Friday)

Game: Clarkstown South vs. Suffern

Score: Clarkstown South Won 49-42

Highlights: Laura Castaldo picked up 24 points in the victory for South. Kaitlyn Wood led Suffern with 17 points in the loss.

Sport: Girls Basketball (Friday)

Game: Pearl River vs. Nyack

Score:

Highlights: Christa Scognamiglio led the way for the Pirates with 27 points including three shots from beyond the arc. Lindsey Sundvik led Nyack with ten points.
