Scarinci pitches clincher for Jaspers

Manhattan College freshman pitcher Michael Scarinci of Nanuet earned his second MAAC rookie of the week award, becoming the only player to be a repeat winner this season.

Scarinci, an alum of Pearl River HS, delivered a two-hitter that helped lift Manhattan to a 7-0 victory at Canisius and clinch the MAAC series.

Scarinci carried a perfect game into the sixth inning as he sat down 15 batters in order, and finished with four strikeouts en route to his first career shutout.

Scarinci faced the minimum 21 batters and did not allow the Golden Griffs to reach second base.

Manhattan returns to action on the road this weekend when they travel to Fort Worth, TX, for a four-game set at Texas Christian University, beginning Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Camardella, Chargers prevail on diamond

The Dominican College baseball team defeated Queens College, 7-3, in a non-conference game at the Veterans Memorial Park in Orangeburg.

The Chargers, improving to 20-23 overall while the Knights fell to 12-22, opened a 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI by Xavier Bonilla and Christopher Gonzalez, both of the Bronx.

Dominican padded the lead in the fourth inning as Tyler Sadawske of Waukesha, WI, had a two-run single, Tony Blake of Windsor, CT, an RBI double, and Andrew Camardella of Pelham with another RBI double. Camardella, an alum of Pelham Memorial HS, had two RBI in the contest.

Anthony Pastrana of Queens improved to 2-4, scattering three hits in six innings for the Chargers, who open a three-game series against Bloomfield (NJ) College today at 3 p.m., and on Saturday host a doubleheader that is set to start at 5:30 p.m.

STAC stands alone

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team, rated No. 4 in the NCAA Division II poll, is the only team to be ranked in the East Coast Conference.

Six teams from the East Region will receive bids to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, which begins with regional play on May 17-21. Three of those seeds will be awarded via automatic bid to the champions of the ECC, Northeast-10, and Central Atlantic Collegiate conferences, with the other three being at-large bids. There will be two more weekly rankings before the tournament field is selected.

The Spartans (27-14) visit Felician (NJ) College today at 3 p.m., and then return home on Saturday for a twin-bill against Mercy College of Dobbs Ferry, scheduled at noon at Provident Bank Park in Pomona. The Mavericks (6-31) host C.W. Post today at 1 p.m. Jesus Jaile of Hartsdale has two homers and 10 RBI while Chris Salvo of Yorktown Heights is batting .229 with seven RBI for Mercy College.

Frank Salerno of New City continues to lead the offensive charge for the Spartans with a team-leading .387 average, followed by Stanley Susana of the Bronx, at .372. George Wargo of West Haverstraw is fifth-best at .333.

On the hill, Matt Marotta of Suffern is 6-1 with a team-best 1.86 ERA while Joe DePool of New City is pitching to a 2.62 ERA.

Mortarboard musings

• Dominican College junior Delaney Childers of Johnstown, OH, has been recognized as the 2012 Central Atlantic Athletic Conference (CACC) softball pitcher of the year, leading the Chargers (34-15) to the regular-season conference crown. Nyack College was awarded the team sportsmanship award. Named first-team all-CACC in addition to Childers, who went 19-7 with a miniscule 0.96 ERA, were Dominican College shortstop Julie Plante of Swansea, MA, and catcher Ashley Corrao of Staten Island.

• K.C. Jentzen of Pearl River, a midfielder on the women’s lacrosse team at Dominican College, has been named Central Atlantic Athletic Conference (CACC) rookie of the week. Jentzen had 12 goals and three assists for a total of 15 points in a 1-1 week for the Lady Chargers, who host Philadelphia University on Sunday at noon on Senior Day. Dominican College is 6-8, but has won three of its last four games including a 22-8 rout of Post University.

• Junior Amanda Babcock of Haverstraw belted a two-run homer as the Manhattan College softball team defeated Fairleigh Dickinson University, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader at Hackensack, NJ. The Jaspers, hitting the road for the only time in a 10-game stretch, dropped the second game, 5-2, as the Knights raised their record to 27-18. The Jaspers (6-31, 1-7 MAAC) resume conference play on Saturday, when Niagara (9-26, 2-6 MAAC) visits Gaelic Park in Riverdale for a 12 p.m. twin-bill. Babcock is batting .250, second-best on the team to Kate Bown of Newtown, CT, who is at .333.

• The Nyack College baseball team’s postseason fate will be decided on Saturday when the Warriors travel to take on the University of Sciences at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia beginning at noon. The Warriors are 19-21 overall, 9-9 in the CACC.

• Meghan Richards of Nanuet had two RBI in 12 starts for the Nyack College softball team.

• The Concordia College baseball team, which remains in contention for one of two final playoff spots in the CACC, split a twin-bill against Nyack College at Provident Bank Park in Pomona. The Clippers won the opener, 4-1, but dropped the nightcap, 3-2. In the opener, David Perlleshi of Eastchester had two RBI, and Chris Fiorito of Yonkers scored a run behind the complete-game effort turned in by Anthony Pisano of Clarkstown, who struck out five. Concordia (11-30, 9-10 CACC) will host non-conference opponent, Dowling College, on Sunday at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.
