Voting Begins Today in Nyack HS Cake Competition

The bond referendum vote is done and the general elections mostly settled, but another vote begins today at Nyack High School.

Students and staff will vote on their favorite among 10 entries in the Cake Off Competition, judging the best of the creations submitted by the 52 students in Culinary teacher Wendy Cummings' two Foods classes. Voting will continue through Tuesday of next week, with the winner announced when the students return from Thanksgiving break.

Following that, the students will enter their second competition, gingerbread houses. The prizes for both are photos of their culinary creations on the Wall of Fame in Cummings' classroom.

The twist this year? Students have been using social media to campaign for their cakes. One group asked to post its cake on Instagram and otehrs followed.

"I'm always amazed how much my students enjoy competing," Cummngs wrote in an email about the event. "In their words, 'It's THAT serious."

Images of this year's cakes, submitted to Patch by Cummings, are attached to this report.
