Nyack Schools Revise Open Campus Policy

The Nyack Public School Board of Education voted, 4-3, Tuesday to approve a revised open campus policy at Nyack High School.

Policy 5181 went through multiple versions before the one that was passed at the meeting Tuesday night, which allows only students in 12th grade to walk off campus for lunch. Those students must meet criteria set by the administration which includes parent permission.

The building administration recommended a fully closed campus, drawing strong opposition from students. The members of the board voted to make the latest adjustment during the workshop portion of their meeting May 7, with board members Claudette Jimerson, Karen Hughes and James Marshall opposing the change. Jimerson said she would support the administration's recommendation while Hughes and Marshall cited safety concerns as reasons they wanted the campus to be closed for all students.

Board members Michael Mark, Leann Irwin, Dan Kaplan and Dan Juechter favored the compromise of letting seniors walk off campus for lunch.
