Nyack Basketball Court Also Used as a Impromtu Dog Park, Bringing Messy Problems

DPW chief asks dog owners to clean up after their pets if they bring them into new basketball court at Memorial Park.

Nyack's new basketball court at Memorial Park is a hit with hoops players - and apparently with dog owners, too.
Village DPW Superintendent Victor Overton says the only problem with that combination is that some dog owners are using the new, fenced-in basketball court as an off-leash play area for their dogs. And, Overtown says, the dog owners are not cleaning up after their pets.
Among the chores village DPW workers have had to add to their to-do list at Memorial Park is cleaning up dog waste left on the basketball court, which is used by local children and adults.
While dogs can be brought into the basketball court, they are required to be on a leash. Also, dog owners are required to clean up after their pets.
So, if you want to let your dog run and play off-leash, where can you go? Overton had a quick answer: The Elizabeth Street park just a short distance away in South Nyack.
The park has a free, off-leash dog play area. The park, however, is not well known because of its location just off South Broadway alongside the New York State Thruway in South Nyack.
If you use the Elizabeth Street park for you pets, South Nyack asks that you follow the park rules, which are posted at the park. The park is open to the public.
