[UPDATE] Vehicle Fire Slows Tappan Zee Bridge Traffic

Dodge Caravan heavily damaged by fire.

UPDATE (11:55 A.M.) - A Dodge Caravan heavily damaged by fire has been cleared from the northbound right lane of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

The van was taken to the South Nyack work lot on the New York State Thruway so it can be removed from the highway.

The fire was reported about 11:15 a.m. and had traffic at a standstill until around 11:50 a.m. when the damage vehicled was taken off the bridge by a Thruway highway rescue truck and northbound lanes were re-opened.

The Thruway rescue truck crew was first to arrive at the fire, which is believed to have started in the engine compartment. No one was reported injured.

Rescue truck crew members and state troopers used fire extinguishers to battle the blaze until firefighters from the Central Nyack Fire Department and the Tarrytown Fire Department arrived and continued to extinguish the fire.

At noon, residual delays from the fire continued to cause traffic congestion on the bridge and through the Tarrytown area.
