Swaying Pole Forces Closure of Route 9W Near Tappan Zee Elementary

Part of Route 9W near Tappan Zee Elementary School was closed for approximately an hour Friday due to an unsteady utility pole.

Piermont Police closed the part of Route 9W near Tappan Zee Elementary school from approximately 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday morning due to an unsteady telephone pole.

"What happened is it’s been weakening," Piermont Police Chief Michael O'Shea said. "It was swaying and the officer on patrol said this is going to fall and could potentially crush somebody. We closed 9W. We had South Nyack close everything northbound. One of our patrols closed it down at Hickey Street. We diverted school traffic into the south lots so they would be safe."

Orange & Rockland Utilities temporarily stabilized the pole and were working on replacing it Friday afternoon.

I guess better late than never. LaCorte is serving his 4th year as Mayor and was Trustee for I thinkRead More 4 years before that. This year is the only time he has brought the idea to the village about participating in this program. He is motivated by the opportunity of getting positive press for his County Executive campaign. The village should have been involved in this program ( as well as the Americorps program) long before this. On a positive note, hopefully the Village will continue this worthwhile partnership for many years to come.
