Swamp Mystery: Investigators Try To Identify Skeletal Remains Found By Hunter

State Police seek public's assistance in solving mystery.

Police in nearby Orange County have a new mystery to solve.

On Sunday, a hunter reported finding what appeared to be skeletal remains in frozen, swampy wetlands in the Town of Montgomery. State Police said an investigation led to the recovery of human remains off Route 17K.

The remains were recovered in an investigation by state troopers, Montgomery police and firefighters, and the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office. Retrieval of the skeletal remains was completed by members of the State Police Troop F Forensic Investigation Unit, Collision Reconstruction Unit, New York State Police Aviation and Scuba Units.

The remains were turned over to the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation and autopsy, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

The remains have not been identified and the investigation is continuing. State Police ask that anyone with information about the remains contact the New York State Police BCI unit in Montgomery at 845-457-1388.
