Orangeburg Man, 20, Charged in Thefts from Cars

A 20-year-old Orangeburg man under investigation in connection with a rash of thefts from unlocked cars has surrendered to police, according to Orangetown Police.

Jeffrey P. Konan of 1A Route 340, Orangeburg, has been charged with two-counts of petty larceny and was also charged with trespassing at a home in Orangeburg.

Police said residents of the Lester Drive area in Orangeburg have complained about recent thefts from their cars. Konan, police said, is charged specifically with thefts of cash from two cars on Jan. 17 at about 3:50 a.m.

The trespassing charge is related to a Jan. 16 incident on Lester Drive, where police said he entered the property a person he had a previous relationship with. However, police said the homeowner had previously warned Konan he was not welcome at the home.

Police urge residents not to leave cash - even small change - in their cars and to make sure to lock cars doors when a vehicle is unattended, even in the driveway of your own home.

After he turned himself in to police at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Konan was processed and released pending a Feb. 6 hearing in Orangetown Town Court in Orangeburg.
