Latest Scam: Con Artist Posing As Ex-Gadhafi Official Lures Victims With Deposed Dictator's Riches

Police say e-mails attempt to get personal information in get-rich-quick fraud.

There’s yet another new version of a popular scam circulating in the area, looking to take advantage of people interested in making a quick buck.

Police say the latest e-mail fraud scheme tries to lure victims into giving personal information to someone posing as a ex-member of the inner circle of Libya’s former dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

The New City-based warns that residents have received e-mails from a person who claims to be in self-exile in Luxemburg, where he professes to have access to a vast Gadhafi fortune that moved out of Libya before Gadhafi was deposed.

The e-mail doesn’t seek money up front, but police said the scheme seeks access to personal information that can be used for identity fraud purposes. Clarkstown police said this is one of many schemes that all have the same agenda — making a victim out of someone who is presented with what appears to be a good opportunity to make money.
