Giant Mulch Pile Fire in West Nyack Has Not Rekindled

Workers manipulating piles to prevent another fire.

After spending hours Thursday evening battling a fire in a giant West Nyack mulch pile, West Nyack volunteer firefighters say the fire has not rekindled today.

The fire created a massive smoke cloud that stretched from the recycling area at the old Clarkstown Landfill just south of Route 59 to Valley Cottage to the north. More than 50 volunteer firefighters battled the stubborn fire, which required long runs of hose line to be stretched from fire hydrants along Route 59 and Route 303.

No one was injured.

Firefighters say that crews at the recycling yard were working at the mulch piles today, moving the material around on the site near the intersection of Route 59 and Route 303. This is hoped to prevent the material from rekindling.

The cause of the fire is uncertain.
