Blauvelt Man Charged With Felony DWI After Crashing Into Road Signs In Nyack

Car heavily damaged as it knocks down large array of signs along Route 9W at High Avenue.

A 48-year-old Blauvelt man is accused of felony drunken driving charges after the car he was driving slammed into a large traffic sign array along Route 9W in Nyack, according to Orangetown police.

Gerhard J. Maier of 212 E. Erie St. was arrested today as police investigated a crash near the corner of Route 9W and High Avenue, where a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Maier had slammed into a signs erected by the state Department of Transportation.

In addition to knocking over a large array of signs, the Malibu was heavily damaged in the crash. Maier was not injured in the crash, police said.

Police said town officers determined Maier was intoxicated and he was taken to police headquarters in orangeburg. Maier failed a chemical breath test for alcohol and was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a felony, because his blood alcohol content registered higher than .18 percent and he has previously been convicted of DWI in Orangetown in 2008, police said.

Maier was released to a family member on $500 bail pending a Dec. 12 hearing in Nyack Village Court.
