3 Violent Acts, 3 Prison Sentences

Rockland County Court Judge William Nelson handed down prison sentences June 17 in three cases involving violence. 

In one, a 24-year-old Haverstraw resident broke the shoulder of a 74-year-old woman when he hit her with a lawn chair. 

In the second, a Spring Valley man burst into a woman's apartment and choked her, demanding money for Chinese takeout.

In the third, a threat with a tire iron accompanied unlawful entry of a Haverstraw home. 

Here are the details from the Rockland County District Attorney's Office:

-- Justin Rivera, Age 24, residing at 28 Middle Street, Haverstraw, was sentenced June 17, 2014, before Rockland County Court Judge William K. Nelson to a state prison term of 1 1/2 to 3 years after pleading guilty to Attempted Assault in the 2nd Degree.

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe stated that on or about September 3, 2013 at approximately 3:00 pm, the defendant struck a 74 year old victim with a plastic lawn chair during an argument. The victim suffered a fractured clavicle bone in her left shoulder.

-- Arturo Vicente-Romero, Age 55, residing at 12 South Myrtle Avenue, Spring Valley, was sentenced June 17, 2014, before Rockland County Court Judge William K. Nelson to a state prison term of 2 years and 2 years post release supervision after pleading guilty to Attempted Burglary in the 2nd Degree. 

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe stated that on or about June 27, 2013 at approximately 7:45 pm, the defendant forced himself thru the victim’s door. He grabbed and choked her while demanding money for Chinese food. The victim escaped the defendant’s grasp and told him that she was calling the police and he thereafter left the apartment.

-- David Tyson, Age 35, residing at 541 Bronx River, Yonkers, was sentenced June 17, 2014, before Rockland County Court Judge William K. Nelson to a state prison term of 8 years and 5 years post release supervision after pleading guilty to Attempted Burglary in the 1st Degree. 

District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe stated that on or about June 16, 2013 at approximately 2:30 pm, the defendant unlawfully entered a dwelling located on Broadway in the Village of Haverstraw. While inside the dwelling, the defendant caused physical injury to another individual whom was not a participant in the crime. The defendant threatened the individual with a tire iron.
