It's the Start of a New School year so why start Fencing?

In the pursuit of NCAA Scholarships and Acceptances parents are continually looking for sports or programs for their child to excel to get that elusive scholarship. Only about 2% of all youth Athletes get a scholarship with the average amount being around $2,000. So what Can Fencing do for you. Fencing has one of the highest rates of Scholarships for the number of Participants in the NCAA, particularly for girls. A men’s team gets 4.5 scholarships per team and women get 5 scholarships. This is in relation to an average roster of 20 and 19 respectively. Most programs do not give out full scholarships but partial scholarships, so on a team of 15 it could be that everyone is receiving some athletic money. Now we are not saying that if you do Fencing you will get a scholarship, instead Fencing will give you something most sports cannot.

Acceptance.

A couple years ago Harvard only admitted less than 5% of all applicants. When a good Fencer has the grades to get in to one of the schools the Coach can help get them in. Academics are the biggest determining factor, if you do not have the grades they can not do anything for you. But being a dedicated competitive Fencer can be the difference between getting into that top tier school. Having a Coach working for on the inside of admissions is a huge advantage. And when you have two students looking to get into your universities having a member of the staff saying they want you in is a huge plus mark. The Coaches at Nyack Fencing have had their students Fence for such schools as Stanford, Harvard, Brown, Notre Dame, Stevens, Cornell, and UPenn just to name a few. This year three students graduated from us and will be fencing for Stevens, Penn State and Sacred Heart University.

Now some people are worried about the safety of the sport as the object of the game is to “stab” the opponent. A recent International Olympic Committee study rated Fencing as one of the safest sports! Only 5 summer Olympic sports posted lower injury rates than fencing in this study of injuries from the 2008 Olympics. (Those were diving, synchronized swimming, rowing, kayak, and sailing.) Fencing was safer even than Badminton, Table Tennis and Swimming.

So to Recap; Fencing is one of the Safest Olympic Sports and gives you a great edge in college recruiting. Also Nyack Fencing Academy in its goal to make Fencing accessible to the resident of Rockland offer the lowest rates of any full time Fencing Facility in the area.
