Enjoy the Ride in 2013

My New Year's resolution goes a little deeper this year.

Happy New Year Rockland Mommies! As usual this year I’ve made the predictable New Year’s resolutions – lose weight, exercise daily and get finances in order. We’ll do a progress report in February about that…

It’s been a rocky season personally with the sudden death of my favorite aunt, emergency dental surgery for my husband and surviving my baby’s first 102 degree fever. On a larger scale - the horrific Newtown tragedy and the general negative political discourse seemed to add to the misery.

It seems this year there is a lot of national and global distress.  I’m thinking about those families of the Newtown victims who have to think about the horror and pain their loved ones faced in the last moments of their lives. And now have the unfortunate remembrance of lost love ones every holiday season from now on. The family of the Indian woman who was brutally gang raped after going out to catch a movie with a male chaperone, but was still violated in the largest democracy in the world. Reminding us if all women aren’t safe then none of us really are. And the ongoing political unrest in our own country – where civility and common sense have been replaced with name calling and a level of utter disrespect.  Didn’t our politicians go to kindergarten where we learn to share and play nice?

This year I’m making a different resolution – to enjoy the ride – meaning when I have had it with being a mommy by 9am (there are those days) I remember that this stage of cuteness is not going to last forever. When they waddle over and throw their arms around you for a hug or blow you a kiss.  A new skill for Sasha that I absolutely love!  She’s sad when you leave the room and runs to greet you on your return. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this elite club of   “mommy-hood” and will try to savor as much as possible.

It can be so easy to get caught up in the depressing news and your own personal misery - I’ve decided we’ve got to live in the moment, and control what we can control. All the best Rockland Mommies - enjoy your family and friends in 2013!
