Bees at Nyack Farmers' Market

A new faces at this year's farmers' market

You'd be surprised how many different things you can make from bees—whether it be from their honey or wax.

"I've always been fascinated by bees. Once I got my own land, I decided to get a few hives," explained Rich Focht of Humingbird Ranch.

Focht is new to the this season, and his booth was set up at last week's bazaar.

"This is my first year here [but] I do many other markets," Focht explained. "I noticed a lot of them are starting to pop up very close together, so I decided to pick a place [Nyack] that wasn't near any of the other I go to. The next closest to here is Warwick."

Focht bases his ranch out of Clinton, NY, which is about an hour-and-a-half from Nyack. The farm started with eggs and maple syrup in 1996; he began raising bees about 10 years ago. All his neighbors couldn't get enough of his goodies, so he decided to expand and make an appearance at farmers' markets around the state.

Now, his variety has expanded: his honey is used for skin care, candles, soap and more.

"The most popular product is the wildflower honey. It's good for allergies. People come looking for it," Focht added..

Maple products are also available at his booth at the Nyack market. A few months ago, Focht did a maple demonstration where harvesting of the sap was shown.
