Nyack Film Festival Opens Thursday

The Nyack Film Festival will begin its four-day run at the Nyack Village Theatre with a reception 7 p.m. Thursday.

The festival, now in its second year, features nearly 40 films ranging from shorts that last a minute to full-length features with a mix of local creators and international ones.

"I provide a platform and a space that takes independent filmmakers seriously and put it together not just for those making the films, but for the public to see some unfiltered new filmmakers' visions," said Richard Quinn, producer of the event and owner of the Nyack Village Theatre.

"We've had some acclaimed filmmakers last year and this year who won awards at other festivals. They may not be known to the local audience, which has a hunger for independent film making and art. Nyack is a Hudson hub of that."

Quinn said he enjoys different types of events that will draw people together outside of their regular activities. He mentioned the recent First Friday as an example.

"People come to walk around and see other people outside of a mall," Quinn said. "We can get people out of their comfort zone. It's all a positive thing."

Tickets for each day cost $12 and can be purchased in advance on the Nyack Village Theatre website here. Seating is limited. The festival runs from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday. There are two sessions Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday's session runs from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Quinn said the Saturday afternoon session is primarily set up for children, including three films based around magic.

For more details about the schedule and individual films, see the PDF attached to this report.

Last year,  Rockland World Radio ran a marathon of the Nyack Film Festival Thanksgiving weekend. Quinn said many of this year's filmmakers have already given permission to include their work in a similar marathon.
