Nyack Jazz Week 2011

Nyack Jazz Week 2011, an annual celebration of jazz & blues presented by the Rockland County Jazz and Blues Society, will begin on Sunday, July 24, 2011 and run until Sunday, July 31st.   Eight consecutive nights of great music (indoors & out, many free to the public) will feature a range of world-renowned artists, turning this village on the Hudson River into a scene that perhaps more closely resembles that jazz Mecca a few miles to the south, Greenwich Village.  Featured artists include the incomparable Fred Hersch playing solo piano in the Carnegie Room at the Nyack Library on Wednesday, July 27th, and the legendary saxophonist Lou Donaldson leading his own quartet in two shows on Friday, July 29th at The Hudson House.   Also appearing: Tenor sax sensation Rich Perry with local bass legend Cameron Brown, The Robert Ross Blues Band, Steven Bernstein & The Millennial Territory Orchestra, Ray Levier and others.  Other noteworthy events include the popular student concert, The Next Generation of Jazz, this year spotlighting award winning 15-year old phenom Sam Hart and his quartet.  Also, Nyack composer Anita Brown will present a participatory lecture about her upcoming large-scale work commemorating 9/11.  The week will close on Sunday at the River Club with a party and jam session featuring vocalist Shirley Crabbe, to be followed by the Jazz Concert Season Finale at the Turning Point in Piermont.
