Piermont PAL Preps for Baseball

Opening day for the Piermont PAL's travel baseball teams is March 24. Organizers are racing to replace equipment and repair damage to Rittenberg Field.

Hurricane Sandy caused tremendous damage in Piermont and Rittenberg Field was not spared.

The home Piermont PAL travel baseball program lost most of the turf and a shed. The PAL is also replacing equipment and uniforms.

"We had to do a lot of clean up and renovation because we lost al the dirt," said Joan Will. "We have to order it and bring in huge truck loads and get it spread before March 24. It's an unfortuante thing. Who expected this? We lost the shed. We lost all of our equipment."

Will said that the equipment has been ordered and the uniforms will all be in on time. The field has been more of a challenge due to the rainy weather. The ground has been too wet to bring the turf in.

The Piermont PAL is planning to field three teams this spring, the youngest for 9-year-olds and the oldest for 15-year-old boys. The program did not have enough players for t-ball.

"Orangetown does a good program and we didn't have the numbers," Will said. "They really do a nice program there. It's important that the kids play."

Piermont PAL baseball teams play on Sundays, with the younger players at Rittenberg Field and the older boys at Veteran's. The coaches choose the leagues, most often in Bergen County.
