Each week, we'll give you the info on the best family activities or events for the week.

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance. 

Look for the kids' planner each Wednesday, and help us build the planner with your own suggestions and tips‚ just add them to the comment box. We want to hear from you!

Storytime: Gregory's Shadow

• When/Where:  Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Barnes & Noble at the Palisades Center
• Why Go: Gregory is a shy groundhog, and having his friend Shadow close by makes him feel brave. But one day they go outside to look for food, and get separated. Will the two friends find each other in time for Groundhog Day?

Storytime: The Snowy Day

• When/Where:  Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Barnes & Noble at the Palisades Center
• Why Go: In 1962, a little boy named Peter put on his snowsuit and stepped out of his house and into the hearts of millions of readers. No book has captured the magic and sense of possibility of the first snowfall better than The Snowy Day.

Young Ones Storytime

Family Fun with Mr. Kurt

• When/Where: 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Nanuet Public Library
• Why Go: Join Kurt Gallagher for a toe-tappin’ hand-clappin’ good time for all ages through Kindergarten. Parent/Caregiver participation required. Older siblings are welcomed

Visit a Museum

• When/Where: Anytime
• Why Go: Most libraries offer passes to area museums to their library patrons. The Friends of the Nanuet Library have recently added a family pass to the New York City Police Museum. Contact your library to find out which museums they have passes to

Free SAT Practice Test

• When/Where: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 at Pearl River Public Library
• Why Go: Kaplan Test Prep provides this free official SAT practice test for students in 10th and 11th grade. Kaplan sends out results with suggestions of areas where the students may need work.

Writing Workshop With Author Emmy Laybourne

• When/Where: Monday, Feb. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Pearl River Public Library
• Why Go: For teens and adults wanting to learn about creative writing and writing styles. Learn from Emmy Laybourn, author of the young adult novel Monument 14.

Pearl River Teen Library Council Meeting

• When/Where: Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Pearl River Public Library
• Why Go: For teens entering grades seven through 12. Participants help select materials for the library and plan upcoming activities.

Homework Help

• When/Where: Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Pearl River Public Library Storytime Room. 
• Why Go: Teen volunteers will be available to help children in Kindergarten through fifth grade with their school work. No registration required. Just show up and bring your work.

Buddyball Basketball

• When/Where: Sundays at Pearl River High School. Began Jan. 13. Buddies arrive at 9:45 a.m. and players come at 10 a.m. 
• Why Go: Athletes from ages three to 21 with developmental disabilities can learn basketball and social skills while working with non-disabled peers known as buddies. The buddies get the opportunity to help others in an athletic environment. They can also fulfill volunteer hours if needed. Buddyball is part of the Orangetown Mighty Midgets, drawing players and buddies from Orangetown and surrounding communities.
