Saturday: Nyack's 'Boo Sandy!' Event

Nyack and surrounding villages were among the hardest hit by hurricane Sandy. But the rebuilding is progressing quickly. To help get residents and businesses back on their feet (and cool the “cabin fever” of days without power), leading Nyack community groups are hosting a “Booo Sandy!” event this coming Saturday, Nov. 10 from 2 – 5 p.m. in the heart of Nyack.

The groups organizing this include the Art, Craft & Antique Dealers Association (ACADA), Friends of the Nyacks, the Nyack Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Nyack

Kicking off in the Main Street parking lot, the party will continue along Main from Franklin to Broadway, where the street will be closed to cars and open to party-goers, trick-or-treaters, shoppers, browsers and strollers. Parking will be free throughout the Village for the event.

Families, friends and neighbors are invited to partake in the great weather forecast — seasonably warm and sunny (for a real change after Sandy and our first snow) — accompanied by live music, “trunk-or-treating” for the kids, food, merchant special offers, restaurant specials… and most important, community outreach programs to help those left in need by Hurricane Sandy.

As a note to families, “trunk-or-treating” means parents can park in the Main Street lot and distribute candy to kids if they like, using up all those goodies that never made it to trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

Jeffrey Friedberg and the Bossy Frog Band, among other local artists, will perform live. Local non-profits and relief groups will be on hand to collect donations. People to People has requested “canned corn” (as an alternative to “candy corn”), as well as any non-perishable food items. And, as an example of the special deals available from Nyack merchants, the p.ross boutique on Main will be offering 15% off on any black or orange merchandise in the shop, which specializes in chic clothing, shoes and accessories from Italy and other fashion capitols of the world.

“Nyack is open for business,” said Paulette Ross, owner of p.ross and Chair of Friends of the Nyacks. “No crisis — no matter how severe — can keep us down for long. We’re picking up the pieces after Sandy, and picking up where we left off with the free-spirited fun we had with our fabulous Halloween parade. We’re also offering support and collecting donations for our friends and neighbors in need.”

For the grown-up crowd, the festivities will continue into the evening with special deals, live music and other treats in participating restaurants and shops.

 “We hope the community will come out in numbers, relax, enjoy and have some much-needed fun,” added Scott Baird, President of the Nyack Chamber of Commerce. “After Sandy and an early snow, we all need to get out and about and enjoy our great Village. We also recognize that many of us are still suffering the effects of the hurricane, and an important part of what we do on Saturday will be aimed at taking care of those among us who need relief.”
