Nyack-Piermont Sports: Tappan Zee Softball, Jaskot Prepare for States

A week of rain forced the Tappan Zee softball team to play four games in four days last week, culminating with Saturday's 4-0 victory over Pearl River in the Section 1 Class A championship game.

The victory earned the Dutchies the opportunity to play in the New York State Softball Tournament, but Tappan Zee does get a brief respite because Section 1 gets a bye into the regional final in Class A this season.

"I'll take tomorrow off for sure," Tappan Zee Head Coach Gene Kousoulas said after Saturday's section championship game. "I told them before we left our field, we'll be back on Monday for practice. Then we'll see where it takes us."

Section 9 champion Walkill will play Section 4 winner Maine-Endwell 3:30 p.m. today at Minisink Valley. Tappan Zee will play the winner Wednesday, with the site and time determined by the opponent. If Mine Endwell wins Monday,Wednesday's game would be played 5:30 p.m. at BAGSAI. If Tappan Zee plays Walkill, the contest would be played 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Minisink Valley.

Jaskot Earns Qualifies for State Track in Two Events

Tappan Zee's Erin Jaskot earned a trip to the New York State Track and Field championships June 7 and 8 in Middletown, NY in two events. Jaskot won the 800 Friday during the first day of the Section 1 State Qualifier Arlington with a time of 2:15. She finished second to Pearl River's Kelly Hayes during the second day of qualifiers, Friday at Arlington, but her time of 4:37.08 was good enough to meet the state standard.
