This is the first of a 4-part article series leading up to the Annual St. Anthony’s Feast on Sunday, June 10. Check back next Tuesday for Part 2
The Church of St. Anthony in Nanuet draws members from all around Rockland. All are devoted, but not everyone knows the roots of the church. Patch looked into the history of St. Anthony’s Church using information from Marie Hoose’s book Nanuet’s Heritage, a centennial publication about St. Anthony’s Church, “The Old Timers’ Notebook”(tales about St. Anthony’s Church) and interviews with Rev. Joseph J. Deponai, or Father Jerry, as he prefers to be called. Saint Anthony's Church is a shrine church in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. It was founded in 1898. “Before it was even called St. Anthony’s it was the Mission Church of St Augustine,” said Deponai. This was in the late 1890’s. There were few established Catholic churches in Rockland …

Local business owners talk positives, negatives of change
Nyack's new parking timetable hasn't had much time to settle in—it's just seven days old—but the first weekend with overnight paid parking already has some merchants talking. The overhaul switched paid times to afternoons and late-night—from now on, munimeters need feeding between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. (Read the details here.) For Rivertown Films, the local film organization that screen flicks at Nyack Center, the revamped schedule is a plus. "It's good for us—now our customers don't have to pay for parking," said Matthew Seig, the group's executive director. Movies are screened in the evening, before paid parking kicks in. "We're the lucky ones in this situation," he added. Rivertown Films' first screening …
29-year-old stopped by Stony Point police for traffic violations.
A Nyack woman faces drunken driving and drug charges after she was stopped for traffic violations, according to Stony Point police. Kristen M. Welsh, 29, of 37 New St., was stopped by a town officer on Thursday. Police said Welsh was found to be intoxicated and in possession of marijuana and assorted other drugs. She was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, unlawful possession of marijuana, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and also issued traffic tickets. Welsh was released pending a June 21 hearing in Stony Point Town Court.
Group prepares for orientation for summer production of “Rent”
For its inaugural summer, the Hudson Valley Teen Summer Theater Program hired Chris Bankey as musical director. It previously announced Randi Accardi signed on as director. Donna Jessie, one of the volunteer organizers, said the two are well known for their work in community theater. So far, 15 teens have fully registered for the troupe, which will present “Rent” during a three-day period, August 10 through 12. Jessie expects more youths from throughout Rockland County and New Jersey to sign up by the June 6 orientation at Clarkstown South High School at 7 p.m. Registration will be accepted that day. “Probably by the time orientation comes around, we should have 30 to 35,” she predicted. Jessie said planning for the summer program, …

Annual golf fundraiser brings in $230,000
Nyack Hospital has $230,000 to put toward new lighting on the heels of its annual golf outing. 129 golfers hit the Rockland County Country Club course last week to fundraise; on the links was Nyack Schools superintendent James Montesano and special guest David Cone, the retired Yankees pitcher. All proceeds will go toward "Let There Be Lights," an effort to install new LED lights in the hospital's operating suites. For a closer look, see the above photos.
Winners honored at RCC.
The Arts Council of Rockland honored the winners of the 2012 County Executive Arts Awards last week at the Cultural Arts Center of Rockland Community College during ACOR’s 26th annual celebration of art, those who support it and those who create it.
Senior citizens learned how to surf the web and about internet safety
Senator David Carlucci (D-Rockland/Orange) held his first ever Senior Technology Seminar to give senior citizens throughout Rockland County the opportunity to learn more about computer technology. The free, two-hour long program held at Rockland Community College was a hands-on experience for seniors to learn about e-mail, the internet, operating computer devices, and other basic technology skills. Two professional librarians: Veronica Reynolds, who focuses in the field of Collection and Web Development at New City Library, and Lauren Moore, Adult Services librarian at Valley Cottage Library taught the Friday class. “It is so important for our seniors to have the knowledge and understanding for how to utilize new technology,” said …

Reader calls for government to keep doctors in New York
To the editor: We applaud Senator Carlucci’s call for greater efficiency in multimillion dollar Doctors Across New York program, a program designed to lure doctors back to New York (“Carlucci Calls for Reform of Medical Program,” May 17). However, the Senator’s reform fails to tackle the major underlying issue, namely, why are doctors leaving New York and why are millions of dollars earmarked to lure them here left unspent? The answer is largely the medical liability climate in New York. In 2010, New York doctors spent $1.65 billion in liability insurance premiums, more than in any other state in the country. The next highest was California, where doctors spent $820m – far less, even in a state with a far greater population. These …
Artwalk's Flash Sketch Mob to tackle citizen cartography
Nyack will have a new village map unlike any other come June. And this map won't be traced by a professional, or churned out by a computer program—it will done by Nyack artists. As part of this year's Artwalk—a village-wide, seven-year tradition that transforms shops into art galleries for one weekend—local artist Bill Batson has pieced together a Flash Sketch Mob. A handful of creative residents will gather at Nyack Center June 16 and be assigned a portion of the village to capture. They'll then have two hours to create their version of the region—and when time is up, each piece will fit together to form a single, sprawling and unique result. "To my knowledge, nothing like this has been done before," Batson said. "Whatever we collect, it'…
