Appreciating Veterans; Sampling Chili Locally

There are many ways to keep busy in and around Nyack, Piermont and Pearl River this weekend, and we're here to help you decide which happenings are for you.

Here are the details for some great local events.

Veterans Appreciation Night at Provident Bank Park
When: 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9
Where: Provident Bank Park in Pomona
Why go? All active and retired veterans will be admitted free to the Rockland Boulders home game and the first 500 veterans will receive a free commemorative t-shirt. Valid military ID required. There will also be $1 beers and a performance by the Mighty Spectrum Band. For more information, go to www.rocklandboulders.com or call (845) 364-0009. The Hudson Valley Chapter of the Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club is hosting the event. 

Orangetown Summer Concert Series
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9
Where: Veteran's Memorial. Park at 81 Hunt Road in Orangeburg
Why go? Take in a free concert by the Mystical Majesty Band, five-time winners of the Fest for Beatles Fans. The 90-minute tribute to The Beatles begins at 7:45 p.m. There is a full concession stand. For more information, including rain sites, call (845) 359-6503. 

Call 911 Chili Cook Off & Music Festival
When: 11 a.m Saturday, Aug. 10
Where: Nanuet High School on Church Street in Nanuet
Why go? The Hudson Valley Paramedic Association presents the Dr. Michael S. Lippe Call 911 Chili Cook Off & Music Festival. There will be 30 chefs competing in multiple categories for their place in the national standings. That means an opportunity for the public to sample up to 30 different chilis. There will also be street vendors, entertainers and public safety displays. Money will be raised for advanced training for EMT's and paramedics through raffles, selling tasting kits and aprons and silent auctions. 

CSI Summer BBQ
When: 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 11
Where: Congregation Sons of Israel at 300 N. Broadway in Upper Nyack
Why go? Join in the annual CSI barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $5 per person. Children under fie eat free. For more information, call CSI at (845) 358-3767.
