  • There will be a K-5 Parent workshop on the Common Core learning standards 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at William O. Schaefer Elementary School in Tappan. The workshop is designed to help parents provide support at home for their children as they adapt to the new standards. Space is limited, so call Ellie at (845) 680-1301 or email frc@socsd.org to RSVP. 
  • Our Community Against Drug Abuse (OCADA) of the Nyacks and Valley Cottage will meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Nyack Center on Broadway in Nyack. 
  • The Orangetown Town Council will hold a public hearing regarding a local law that would allow the board to override the state mandated tax cap for the 2014 budget at the regular meeting in town hall Tuesday night. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. with the public hearing set for 8 p.m. The town council's preliminary budget for 2014 is also due to be submitted Tuesday. Wednesday, Oct. 23 
  • School Counselors of Rockland County will hold its 40th annual College Night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Eugene Levy Fieldhouse at Rockland Community College. Read more here
Saturday, Oct. 26
  • The SOCASA/SADD Annual Walk/Run is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the South Orangetown Middle School at 160 Van Wyck Road in Blauvelt. The event is sponsored by South Orangetown Community Awareness of Substance Abuse and Students Against Destructive Decisions. Registration is at 9 .m.
  • Activities related to Nyack's 26th Annual Halloween Parade begin 3 p.m. in the Main Street Parking lot. Marchers and floats gather in Memorial Park at 4 p.m., with the parade stepping off at 5:30 p.m.
