Soup Angels to Feed Thanksgiving Hungry

Nyack soup kitchen gears up for holidays

No Nyacker should go hungry—that's the implied mantra of , the village's downtown, non-profit soup kitchen.

And during the season of Thanksgiving, this mantra is amplified. "It's during the holidays that we receive the most requests to volunteer," explained Katie Berry, who co-founded the organization. Soup Angels was launched in 2005, and feeds the village's hungry every Wednesday out of the downtown.

Still, the well-intentioned and popular non-profit can become overwhelmed during the November and December months, its busiest period. "We have a huge output of dinners around Thanksgiving," Berry said. "[And] we rely on the public, not grants." Soup Angels function on the generosity of neighbors, who donate food and money.

November 23—the Wednesday before this year's Thanksgiving—will be the organization's sixth annual Thanksgiving dinner. It boasts typical holiday fare; folks who show up will be treated to hot turkey and gravy, corn bread, green beans and apple and pumpkin pies. There will be decorations, too, and live music.

"It comes out quite beautiful," Berry added.
