Piermont, Blauvelt Lions Prepare for Applefest

Ninth-annual fete will benefit charity

Piermont's always-anticipated Applefest is just over a month away, and volunteers are already preparing for the non-profit bash.

"It's our largest fundraiser," said Laurie Wohl, president of the Lions Club Blauvelt chapter. The Lions Club serves the entire Orangetown community, and has been organizing Applefest for nine years. This year's is slated for Sunday, Sept. 30 at Flywheel Park.

"All the money raised goes back to the community—we don't keep a dime," Wohl continued. "It's a lot of hard work, but you get so much pleasure out of it."

In the past, the Lions have helped bolster local pre-school programs, plant trees throughout the county, combat measles and screen for possible eye problems in youngsters.

"We help parents who may not have the funds to take their kids to the eye doctor," Wohl said.

In 2009, a Lions Club fundraiser allowed the group to gift a scooter to a young handicapped boy in Blauvelt to increase his mobility.

"The grin on his face was ear-to-ear," Wohl said.

A portion of money raised through Applefest comes from vendors renting table space and selling wares.

"We have a lot of repeat vendors," Wohl said. "They keep coming back—[Applefest] has built-up a reputation."

The yearly fete will also feature free face-painting for kids, along with jewelry making and rides.

The event's centerpiece, however, are the eponymous apples.

"The Thursday before, the Lions will get together and bake apple pies," Wohl said. The confections are then sold at the function, alongside hamburgers, hot dogs and other eats.
