Penguin Plunge Set for March in Nyack

Jump into Hudson waters will benefit two local children

Adventurous Rocklanders will take a dip into the frigid Hudson River waters this March to help benefit local, ailing youngsters.

The fifth annual Penguin Plunge is set for Sunday, March 4, from noon to 2 p.m., at Nyack's Memorial Park.

This year, the event will raise funds for Alex Fernandez of Valley Cottage Elementary School and Francesco Galvano of Pearl River Middle School.

Fernandez, and outgoing fourth grader, had been experiencing severe headaches—testing revealed he is battling a rare brain-tumor, and needs radiation treatment.

Fernandez has had help from international doctors, and his family is perenially by his side.

Galvano, a seventh grader, was diagnosed with leukemia this past summer, and has been undergoing treatment since.

"He is excited about being able to go to Pearl River High School next year to be with his older brothers," the Plunge's website reads. He has one brother, Giovanni, in 11th grade and another, Vincenzo, in ninth. 

"All of the kids that Penguin Plunge benefits are our family," said Barbara Noyes, who helped orchestrate this year's event, and .

Residents who want to pitch in, but are weary of peeling off their clothes and jumping into icy waters, can turn up to donate, watch others and grab food and listen to music.

A Pengun Plunge pasta night is also scheduled for Friday, March 2 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Blauvelt Fire Department (548 Western Highway, Blauvelt). Donations are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children; there will be a raffle during the evening.
