Tappan Zee Athletic Dept. Earns National Award

Tappan Zee High School had its share of success on the field last year, but that was only part of what earned its athletic program national recognition.

Coach and Athletic Director Magazine selected Tappan Zee High School for its 2013 National Interscholastic Sports Program Excellence Award for public schools.

"WE are proud and humbled to receive such a prestigious honor," said Tappan Zee Athletic Director Liam Frawley. "I truly believe that athletics is not an extra-curricular, but a co-curricular activity.  We are an extension of the classroom with our coaches as teachers who not only teach the “X’s and O’s”, but take pride in building men and women for others through character education, volunteerism and life lessons.  I am extremely proud of our coaching staff and the relationships they have built with their student-athletes. I applaud each one of our coaches, student-athletes, teachers, administrators, and parents for contributing to this honor.”

Tappan Zee was chosen for its strength in eight categories -- participation rate, coaches certification, community service, athletic director national certification, scholar-athlete status, level of participation, sportsmanship and parent participation.

“In just our second year with the Program of Excellence, we’re overwhelmed by the quality of our nominees and the effort they put into building a distinguished athletic program,” said Coach and Athletic Director Managing Editor Kevin Hoffman.  “Our judges had a very difficult job, but this year’s honorees are certainly worthy given their achievements and dedication to educational athletics.”

Coach and Athletic Director has been around for over 80 years and features a circulation of over 28,000. For more on the award, go to the magazine's website here
