Sullivan Leads Albertus Past Pearl River

Jack Sullivan scored 31 points to lead Albertus Magnus to a 58-56 victory at Pearl River Tuesday.

Pearl River shifted defensive tactics early, but never did find a way to stop Albertus Magnus guard Jack Sullivan.

Sullivan poured in 31 points to lead Albertus to a 58-56 victory at Pearl River Tuesday.

"It was our inability to deal with Jack Sullivan," Pearl River Head Coach Jerry Houston, Jr. said. "He had a huge game. He played really well. Made a lot of tough shots. He's got a very quick release and tonight he shot a high percentage."

Sullivan helped Albertus Magnus (8-2) take control early, making four 3-point shots and finishing with 14 points in the first quarter alone, when the Falcons took a 19-9 lead.

Pearl River's offense also revolved around one player as junior forward Kevin Degnan led the Pirates with 30 points. Houston said missed opportunities were costly for Pearl River, which dropped to 5-4.

"I thought we had some advantages in 2-on-1 or 3-on-2 and had a chance to finish around the basket, but didn't turn it into points," Houston said. "Like Kevin's breakaway in the first half. The ball gets knocked out of his hands (by Sullivan), goes out of bounds and we get no points."

Houston also pointed to some missed shots inside in the fourth quarter and a steal by Sullivan, who stripped the ball from Degnan after a rebound with about three minutes left and the Pirates within two.

"We have to learn how to win," Houston said. "It sounds stupid. Just score more points than the other team, but it's making those plays. Being stronger around the basket. Securing the ball. Knocking down free throws. We had opportunities slip away tonight."

Pearl River will have to rebound quickly with a game at Tappan Zee set for 7 p.m. Friday. The .

"There is not a lot of time to dwell on it," Houston said. "We have to be ready for a physical game Friday."

Houston needs to rethink his coaching methods. The outside perimeter game obviously is not working. Time to rethink your strategy and the use of your personel.

Houston is a very poor coach, it is no surprise to me that Pearl River has never won a section title with him as their coach. As long as he remains head coach, that won't change.
