Former Pearl River Athletic Director Tom Doherty often promotes Rockland County sports by trying to spark debates.
Most recently, he polled the local spots community to put together a list of the top girls basketball players in Rockland County history, breaking them into first, second and honorable mention teams with an MVP and an all-time top coach.
Doherty released the results late last week with 1983 Nyack High School graduate Dawn Royster named most valuable player and Lorraine Moylan of Albertus Magnus and Pearl River taking top coaching honors. Moylan retired in March after 20 years at Pearl River, 30 total, as Rockland County's all-time leader in basketball coaching victories.
Rockland County's all-time leading scorer, 2001 Tappan Zee graduate Stephanie Cleary, made honorable mention. She finished her career with 2,155 points, the only girls baketball player in the county's history with over 2,000 points. She also finished her college as the all-time leading scorer at Ithaca. Pearl River's Christa Scognamiglio, a 2012 graduate and the No. 2 all-time scorer in Rockland with 1,685 points, made the second team.
