Dominican, which led 32-31 at intermission behind Quimby’s 14 points and seven rebounds, dropped to 9-5 all told and 2-4 in the conference. Quimby led all scorers with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Guard Khaleev Ginyard of Brentwood added 10 points for the Chargers, while Johnathan Brown of Central Islip contributed eight points and five rebounds coming off the bench.

Leon Porter II of Laurel, MD, had a game-high seven assists in the loss.

Dominican returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 18 with the first of three straight road games, visiting CACC rival Concordia College in Bronxville at 7 p.m. The Chargers then meet Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA, on Jan. 21 before traveling to local rival Nyack College on Jan. 26.

Lady Chargers climb to .500

Junior Lindsey Lopez of Elmwood Park, NJU, had a career-high 28 points, and Nanuet HS alumna K.C. Jentzen of Pearl River added six points and six rebounds off the bench to lead the Dominican College women’s basketball team to a 66-62 overtime victory over visiting Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game at the Hennessy Center in Orangeburg.

Dominican, which improved to 6-6 overall and 6-1 in the CACC, never trailed in overtime, opening the period with a 10-4 run. Lopez sealed the victory with two free throws.

The Lady Chargers had trailed 52-46 with just over two minutes remaining in the second half when guard Shannon Lavelle of Floral Park hit key back-to-back treys to tie the score.  DC had two shots to win in regulation, but a missed jumper and lay-up forced overtime.

Lopez led all scorers, while Lavelle finished with 12 points and six assists. Bianca Harris of Teaneck, NJ, grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds in the victory.

Dominican returns to action on Jan. 18th when they travel to Bronxville for a game at 5:30 p.m. against CACC rival Concordia College.

Bonnies are riding high

The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team (15-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10) continued its best-ever road start to a season behind a team-high 20 points from senior Megan Van Tatenhove of Sheboygan Falls, WS, with a 74-65 win over Temple (7-8, 1-1 A-10) at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

Junior Alaina Walker, one-time standout at Albertus Magnus, has six points and one steal in 15 minutes as the Bonnies extended the nation’s best road record to 7-0, and starts the conference campaign at 2-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

St. Bonaventure welcomes Saint Louis University on Saturday (Jan. 14) at the Reilly Center in Olean. Tipoff against the Billikens (6-11) is set for 1 p.m.

Warriors clipped

Junior Argelix Gil of Brooklyn scored his 1,000th career point as the Concordia College men’s basketball team defeated host Nyack College, 91-74, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at Bowman Center.

The Warriors, still looking for that elusive first victory, had four players reach double figures in scoring, led by freshman forward Chris Hampton of Brooklyn with 18 points on 6-of-17 shooting.

Freshman Khalid Samuels of Mount Vernon and sophomore Ryan Woodard of Clinton, MD, each scored 14 points, with Woodard also pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

Senior Lafayette Curtis of Staten Island netted 12 points for the Warriors, who will try again on Saturday (Jan. 14) with a game in Wilmington, DE, against Goldey-Beacom College (7-6). Julian Wright of Mount Vernon, a freshman guard out of Archbishop Stepinac HS in White Plains, has appeared in two games for the Lightning.

Haddican helps relay to victory

Sophomore Jesse Haddican of Pearl River helped the College of Mount Saint Vincent swimming team secure a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a meet against host Mount Saint Mary College.

Three Dolphins picked up individual victories in a 99-69 Skyline Conference defeat in Newburgh, to go along with the relay win in which Haddican was joined by Christina Quinn of Maywood, NJ, Katherine Coghlan of Yonkers, and Tori Gingrich. The quartet clicked in 2:42.12.

Quinn clocked 1:25.70 to win the 100-yard backstroke, Janna Libby of Freeport, ME, earned first-place points in the 500-yard freestyle after posting a time of 7:02.41, while Brooke Baltazar of Wilmington, DE, came home first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:26.42.

The loss is the Dolphins third straight and drops them to 1-9 overall on the season and to 0-3 in league meets. The Dolphins will be back in the water again next week when they head to Orlando, FL, for their winter training trip.

Violets are blooming

It will be a special day on Sunday (Jan. 15) at the Coles Sports Center at 181 Mercer Street in New York when New York University men’s basketball coach Joe Nesci is honored in pre-game ceremony.

NYU hosts undefeated powerhouse Emory University (12-0) on Friday (Jan. 13) at 8 p.m., and then stays home for Sunday’s game at 1 p.m. against the University of Rochester (9-3).

An NYU alumni game is set for 11 a.m.

The Violets are 9-1 after losing a thrilling heartbreaker to rival Brandeis University, 52-49, in each team’s University Athletic Association (UAA) opener. But Nesci, in his 24th season, had already passed Howard Cann for the most victories in men’s basketball at NYU.

Nesci now has 412 career wins, passing the 409 total that had been accumulated by Cann, an NYU Hall of Famer.

Helping the Violets to their stellar season has been 6-foot-6 junior forward Max Wein of Purchase.

The graduate of Solomon Schechter is fifth on the team in scoring with 5.7 points per game, and his 21 rebounds in tied for second-most. Wein also has nine steals, and three blocked shots.

Iyoha Agho of New City, an alum of St. Joseph’s Regional in Montvale, NJ, is a freshman guard, and seeing limited playing time as a newcomer to the Violets.

Manhattan names lacrosse captains

The Manhattan College women’s lacrosse team, which is hopeful of bouncing back from a 4-10 campaign in 2011, are pointing this season to the leadership of four senior captains appointed by first-year head coach Diane Haddeland of Mahopac.

The Jaspers’ captains are Elizabeth Dugan and Chrissy Gutenberger, both of Stony Point, BrieAnna Spatarella of Rocky Point, and Breana Leonard of Bay Shore.

“Our seniors have been so invested in the program since they have had three coaches in their careers,’’ said Haddeland on the gojaspers.com website. “The four of them have stepped up in so many different ways to lead the team.”

Dugan, a midfielder, and the daughter of Katherine and Michael Dugan, started all 14 games last season leading all position players with 39 ground balls while netting 11 goals in her junior season.

“Elizabeth is more of a lead by example player,” Haddeland noted. “She’s not very vocal, she’s much quieter, but she just performs and she’s scrappy all over the field.”

Gutenberger, one of the top attackers in program history, and the daughter of Eric and Pat Gutenberger, led the team in goals (33) and points (39) despite missing three games due to illness.

“Chrissy has been a great player here for so many years and is very vocal on the field,” said Haddeland. “Along with BrieAnna they will balance each other out at the attack.”

The seniors are working with their third different coach at Manhattan, which is something their head coach believes will make them stronger leaders.

“I think that is telling of why they are the four captains,” Haddeland said. “Changing coaches is one of the hardest things to do. I can’t imagine doing it once let alone three times. They have been really great in helping me out and making my job much easier.”
