Today: Golden Gloves Boxing Returns to Rockland County

Event to include women's bouts.

The Daily News Golden Gloves returns to the Joseph T. St. Lawrence Community, Health & Sports Center in Hillburn for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday.

The fight card will feature action from the 125 lb. women’s and the 165 lb. men’s novice class. 

Six-time Golden Gloves Champion Christina Cruz and 2012 runner up Nicole Russell headline the 125 lb. class. Cruz, who is seeking her seventh Golden Gloves Championship, last year broke the Tournament record set by amateur boxing legend Mark Breland.

The 165 lb. men’s class features 62 entrants.

The Joseph T. St. Lawrence Center is located at 115 Torne Valley Road, Hillburn. Doors open at 2:15 p.m. and the first bout is set for 3 p.m.

The Daily News Golden Gloves, now in its 86th year, is among the oldest and best known amateur boxing tournaments in the world, having produced fighters who have gone on to become Olympic and professional champions. The Ramapo bouts are held each year in memory of Patrick Faherty, the late principal of Suffern High School.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for First Responders, those 14 and younger and senior citizens 60 and over. Tickets will be available at the door or in advance at Ramapo Town Hall, 237 Route 59, in Airmont.

Proceeds of this event go to the N.Y. Daily News Charities and the Vietnam Veterans of Rockland County. The event is sponsored by Ireland’s 32, Pannone Lopes Devereaux & West LLC, The Tisi Family, New York Daily News and the Town of Ramapo.
