Spartans on the Run, Sparkle in the Sun

Vote on this week's sports poll and check out your interactive, daily digest for all Nyack scores, schedules and standings — and a place for you to add information and images for all of your favorite sports and teams.

The Top Spot:

Sophomore George Erazo of North Babylon set a St. Thomas Aquinas College standard in the 400 meters with a victorious time of 48.11 at the Jack Toms Invite in Lynchburg, VA.

Erazo also placed third in the 100, and was fourth in the 200.  Junior Mike Abelard of Ramapo took second in the 200 with a time of 22.32, while junior Garvenchy Nicolas of Midwood hit a personal best in the 800 with a time of 1:56.42, good for fourth.

Sophomore Mike Kraus of Pascack Valley also hit a personal record in the 800 with a time of 1:58.93 as the Spartans finished 11th in a highly competitive 21-team field.

On the women’s side, sophomore Keeley Bateman of Pearl River was fourth in the 800, clocking 2:20.92.

Another solid effort was turned in by freshman Catherine Sandkuhl of North Babylon, who took seventh with a time of 2:26.48.

The Spartans return to action on Saturday at the Monmouth University Season Opener.

College Sports Notebook:

Mortarboard musings

  • Junior attack Paul Moreau of Pearl River and the Manhattan College men’s lacrosse team, which is looking to reach the .500 mark, enters conference play on Saturday when the Jaspers travel to Buffalo to challenge Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Canisius at 11 a.m.
  • The St. Thomas Aquinas College women’s lacrosse team, coming off a 15-9 loss, hosts Marywood College at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Freshman Genevieve Stickney of Bayport scored three goals in the loss to Assumption College, while Alexis Serras of Lindenhurst and Alannah McAllister of Bayport each scored two goals. North Rockland alumna Stephanie Nelson of Stony Point had 14 saves in goal. STAC went ahead on a goal by Johanna Mitchell of Pearl River with 22 minutes left to play before Assumption pulled away.
