College Sports Notebook:

The Rutgers University women’s lacrosse team, coming off a 15-7 victory over Hofstra, is home on Saturday to meet intrastate foe Monmouth.

Game time is 1 p.m. at the RU Turf Field in Piscataway, NJ, and is the front end of a doubleheader, with the men’s team taking on St. John’s at 3 p.m.

The Scarlet Knights dismantled Hofstra in Hempstead behind a career-best four goals from senior midfielder Ali Steinberg of Suffern, marking the ninth hat trick of her career.

Lauren Sbrilli of Martinsville, NJ, and junior attack Annie McGinley of Moorestown, NJ, each added three goals for the Scarlet Knights.

The Scarlet Knights roared to a 3-0 lead in the first 3:23 of the game before Hofstra scored, then Steinberg notched back-to-back goals on a deflection, and an assist by Danielle Mascera of Vernon, NJ.

Steinberg—who was selected the Big East weekly honor roll--scored just after the break on a free position shot before Hofstra went on a 2-0 spurt to pull within three, 7-4. RU answered with five unanswered goals to take control of the contest.

Steinberg--a unanimous preseason all-Big East selection—has won the weekly accolade four times in her career, and twice this season.

Steinberg totaled eight draw controls, four goals, four ground balls and four caused turnovers in a 1-1 week for the Scarlet Knights.

On the season, Steinberg paces RU with 15 points on 11 goals and four assists. She also ranks second on the squad with 12 draw controls and five caused turnovers.

Mortarboard musings

  • The Manhattan men’s lacrosse team took an 8-2 lead into halftime and held off a late rally to defeat the Mercer University 8-6 in Macon, GA, to snap a two game losing skid. The victory was the first road win of the season for the Jaspers (2-4) and kept the Bears (0-8) searching for their first win of the year. The Jaspers return home on Saturday to host Binghamton at 1 p.m. at Gaelic Park in Riverdale. Junior attack Paul Moreau of Pearl River took seven shots for the Jaspers, with three on goal, but was held scoreless.
