The Rockland County Senior Athletes of the Season were named last week for the 2011-2012 season.

Suffern hockey player John Redgate was named the Rockland Male Senior Athlete of the Season and Pearl River basketball player and all time leading point scorer was given the Female Athlete of the Season.

Indoor track star Kyle Gill and basketball player Taryn Brady won the awards for Nyack’s best senior athletes of the winter season and basketball players Pat Peterson and Regina Argenzio each won the award for Tappan Zee.

League 4B Spring Track and Field Championships

Pearl River will look to defend its boys and girls track and field spring  team titles in the League 4B hampionships starting 3:45 p.m. today at Pearl River High School.

The Pirates will compete with Albertus Magnus, Nanuet, Nyack, Spring Valley and Tappan Zee. Pearl River won both team titles last spring and swept the boys and girls league championships during the indoor season in January of this year.

College Sports Notebook:

Play Ball!

Dominican College and Nyack College are set for action on Tuesday as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Championship gets under say.

The third-seeded Chargers (23-24, 13-7 CACC) will host No. 6 seed Caldwell (12-28, 9-11 CACC) while No. 4 seed Bloomfield (21-16, 13-7 CACC) will host No. 5 seed Nyack (23-22, 11-9 CACC). Both games are slated for a 2 p.m. The survivors advance to the double-elimination phase of the championship, which is scheduled Thursday through Saturday and hosted by Wilmington (DE) University.

Thursday’s games will be played at Wilson Field on the campus of Wilmington University. No. 1 seed Felician (25-20, 16-4 CACC) will begin the action when it faces the Bloomfield/Nyack winner at noon. Second-seeded Wilmington (29-16, 14-6 CACC) will follow with a contest against the Dominican/Caldwell winner at 3 p.m.

Friday's and Saturday’s games are scheduled at Frawley Stadium, home of the South Atlantic League’s  Wilmington Blue Rocks, a Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Friday’s game times are slated for noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The title game on Saturday is scheduled at 11 a.m. If necessary, a second game will be played at approximately 2 p.m.

The winner of the CACC Baseball Championship earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship.

Wilmington University captured the 2011 CACC Baseball Title and has won two of the last three, dating back to 2009.

 

Big East Honor for Steinberg

Rutgers University women’s lacrosse senior midfielder Ali Steinberg of Suffern was named to the all-Big East first-team, while junior midfielder Stephanie Anderson of Wading River was named to the second-team.

“I’m very thankful for everything my teammates have done for me, and they are a big part of this award,” Steinberg was quoted as saying. “I couldn’t have asked for a better season with this team. I also owe a lot to Coach (Laura Brand-Sias) and would like to thank her as well. I’m honored to be recognized.”

Steinberg paced the Scarlet Knights with 48 points on 32 goals and 16 assists. The midfielder added 38 draw controls, 21 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. Steinberg ranked fourth in the league in free position goals per game (0.88) and eighth in points per game (3.00).

 

Mortarboard musings

  • Rasheen Davis, a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas College where he later served as an assistant to veteran men’s basketball coach Dennis O’Donnell, has joined the staff at Manhattan College. Davis, who received a Masters degree from the College of New Rochelle, will serve under Jaspers head coach Steve Masiello of White Plains.
