Nyack Girls' Basketball Tops Sleepy Hollow

College Notebook: Pucci power

Freshman Samantha Pucci of Pearl River, a rearguard, has helped the Utica College women’s hockey team reel off a three-game winning streak headed into the semester break.

The Pioneers downed visiting Cortland State 5-0 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium as sophomore goalie Jennifer Hamel registered her second shutout of the season with 13 saves.  

The Pioneers, now 3-5 in ECAC West play, evened their overall record to 6-6 as they moved up to sixth in the conference standings.  Utica returns to the ice Jan. 7 when it hosts Manhattanville College (4-5-2) at “The Aud” at 4 p.m.

Samantha’s older sister Josephine, a senior defender at Harvard, has managed to put up 11 points in 10 games for the Crimson, who lifted their record to 8-4 after beating New Hampshire 5-2. Harvard returns to action at Princeton (6-9) on Jan. 6.

Spartans speed to success

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women’s track and field team was led by Catherine Sandkuhl of North Babylon at the Harvard Open in Boston, MA. 

 Sandkuhl, one of several freshman stars for the Spartans, set a school record in the 400-meter run with a very-fine time of 1:01.22 that was good for eight-place in a field of 54 competitors.

Sophomore Keeley Bateman of Pearl River ran her first 800 meters of the season and clocked 2:23.71, which took ninth in a field of 34 competitors. 

Other notable performances were recorded by the strong freshmen class.  Kaitlyn Mancini of Long Island improved on her own school record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.37, and ran the 200 in 27.76, good for 35th place out of 103. Ashley Stokkeland of Warwick ran her first career 400 meters in a time of 1:03.27, which took 26th overall in the competition.  

In the 3,000-meter run Katelyn Garvey of Pearl River ran a very respectable time of 11:42.29.

The Spartans’ men’s and women’s teams return to action at the New Balance Armory on Jan. 6.

The men are coming off a solid showing at the St. John’s Bill Ward Invitational at St. Anthony’s High School in Huntington.

Sophomore George Erazo of North Babylon won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49:74, and also placed seventh in the 200 in 23.26.

Mike Kraus of River Vale, NJ, another sophomore, was third in the 800, clocking 2:03.68 while classmate Frankie Colon of Suffern won the triple jump with a leap of 12.95 meters.

Mike Galonski of Newton, NJ, and Joe Chegwidden of Hamburg, NJ, finished one-two in the 3,000-meter run with respective clockings of 9:13.58 and 9:13.59.

Freshman Alex Andre of Garnerville was fourth in the mile with a time of 4:34.98, and junior Rich Ricca of Pearl River took seventh in the 60 in 7.21.

Senior Trevor Milazzo of Hackensack, NJ, threw a personal-best 11.03 meters in the shot put.

Kantor Adds to Trophy Case

Sophomore defender Maya Kantor of New City earned first-team recognition on the women’s soccer VaSID College Division all-state team for her soccer exploits at Roanoke University.

Kantor, a graduate of Clarkstown North, anchored the backfield in her second season as a starter for the Maroons, who posted 12 shutouts in the fall to finish 14-5-2 on the season, including an 8-3 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Roanoke advanced to the program’s third NCAA appearance in its 27-year history, following other achievements in 1998 and 2007, falling to Centre in penalty kicks, 8-7, in the first round of the tournament at Emory University in Atlanta.

Kantor earlier had been named to the NSCAA all-South Atlantic Region team for a second straight season.
