Harrison Wins County Center Championship

The Top Spot:

Down seven at halftime, the 7th and 8th grade Harrison Maroon midget boys basketball team came back to win the annual boys recreation tournament championship last week at the Westchester County Center.

Head coach Joe Mellea's team came out with new energy in the second half, creating turnovers and fast break opportunities. The Harrison team tied the score at 37 at the end of regulation to force overtime, then outscored Shrub Oak 14-0 during the extra time for a 51-37 win.

Jack Hockman led Harrison with 17 points and Frank Fiorino followed with 16. Chris Siapanides added seven in the victory.

The team was made up of some of the best players from local recreation leagues selected to play in the 82nd Annual Boys Recreation Tournament.

Tomorrow’s Schedule:

In boys lacrosse, Rye takes on Harrison at HHS at 4:30 p.m.

College Sports Notebook:

Valiants Bring Home Conference Awards

Senior shortstop Dan Fiorito and junior pitcher Alyssa Taylor each brought home conference awards for the Manhattanville Valiants this week.

won the Freedom Conference’s Player of the Week as the shortstop went 11-for-18 with five home runs and eight RBI during the week. The Valiants dipped below .500 as they lost 10-0 to Alvernia last night. The team now stands at 8-9 on the year. 

Taylor was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the Valiant softball team as she went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA in four appearances last week. Taylor and the rest of the Valiants will head up to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
