• Willie Gabay a Mahopac native and right-handed pitcher from Herkimer County Community College was picked up by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 15th round yesterday. Just a few years ago Gabay was actually cut from his varsity baseball team.

• Iona College’s third basemen Chris Burke was selected with the 555th  pick overall in the 18th round in yesterday’s Major League Baseball draft. Burke was selected by the San Diego Padres and he is the first Iona Player picked since 2006.

• Sean Lucas, a graduate of Beacon High School was taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball draft. Lucas a left handed pitcher at Albany finished this season at 4-6 with a 5.19 ERA.

• Mamaroneck graduate and current St. Johns left hander Sean Hagan was picked up in the 29th round by the Minnesota Twins. Hagan was the New York state player of the year in 2009 and the 6’6’’ left-hander was one of several members of the Red Storm to be drafted this year.

• Manhattan’s Anthony Vega was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 30th round of the Major League baseball draft. The outfielder from Patchogue NY was named first team All-MAAC this season and led the Jaspers in most offensive categories.

Highlights: Ryan Koval pitched a gem as he went seven innings striking out five and only allowing three hits. Matt Forlow scored twice in the win.

Score: Garden City Won 14-4

Highlights: Garden City’s Justin Guterding led the scoring with four goals and Havard-bound senior Devin Dwyer picked up seven assists and a goal in the win.

Game: Bronxville vs. Shoreham-Wading River

Score: Shoreham-Wading River Won 11-2

Highlights: Trevor Brosco and James Higgins each scored three goals in the win. Brewster Warble scored twice in the loss.

College Sports News:

Manhattanville’s Fiorito an all-American

Dan Fiorito of Yonkers, a standout on the Manhattanville College baseball team, was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Division III all-America third team, as voted on by college coaches across the country.

The Fordham Prep alum, an honorable mention selection in 2010, is the first male student-athlete ever at Manhattanville and fifth student-athlete overall to earn multiple sll-America honors at the Purchase-based school, joining women’s hockey stars Ashley Trimble (2006) and Cherie Stewart (2005), women’s lacrosse standout Katie Frattarola (2001) and women’s basketball legend Theresa Carey (1982).

The senior shortstop finished in the top-five in the Freedom Conference in most offensive categories, including first in home runs (12), runs scored and slugging percentage (.760); second in stolen bases, total bases (111) and on-base percentage (.488); and fifth in batting average. He also ranks highly on a national level as well, sitting sixth in Division III in homers, seventh in homers per game, eighth in runs per game and 11th in slugging percentage.
Manhattanville’s co-Male Athlete of the Year, Fiorito set single-season records at the school for homer and total bases, while also ranking sixth on the single-season lists in runs scored and hits and seventh in slugging percentage.

Playing only three seasons for the Valiants, Fiorito sits third all-time at the school in home runs (21) and fourth in slugging percentage (.648), while also placing sixth in runs scored (116) and total bases (258), seventh in batting average (.397) and runs batted in (108), and 10th in hits (158) and on-base percentage (.474).

Mortarboard musings

• Dominican College softball standouts Delaney Childers of Johnstown, OH, and Ashley Corrao of Staten Island have been named to the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) all-star team. In addition, Childers (24-8, 1.08 ERA) was honored as the ECAC Pitcher of the Year. Corrao, who had a stellar junior campaign behind the plate, ranked sixth among CACC leaders with 42 RBI while posting the league’s 10th-best batting average at .381. She also led the conference with 32 walks and her .502 on-base percentage was the second-best among the league leaders.

• The St. John’s University baseball team, fresh off a 3-0 mark in winning the Chapel Hill (NC) Regional, opens play against Arizona in the best-of-three Tucson Super Regional with a 3 p.m. game on Friday. All games of the Super Regional will air on ESPN2. The Red Storm (40-21), appearing in a Super Regional for the first time in program history, will continue play against Arizona (41-17) with another 3 p.m. game on Saturday. If necessary, the series will conclude on Sunday at 4 p.m. St. John’s pitching staff includes southpaw ace Sean Hagan of Larchmont. Anthony Iacomini of North Salem went 0-for-2 with a run while outfielder Jimmy Brennan of Airmont was 1-for-6 with an RBI in the Red Storm’s 9-5 victory over North Carolina that clinched the Chapel Hill Regional crown.

• Forward Bryan Merlos of Harrison and goalie Brian McNicholas of Stony Point will be playing soccer for a new coach next season at SUNY Cortland. Steve Axtell served as the program’s interim head coach for five months prior to his hiring and was an assistant coach for the Red Dragons in 2010 and 2011.
