Clarkstown North won on the road as they beat Pearl River 11-4. T.J. Margiotta pitched five innings and struck out ten Pirates in the win for the Rams. Kyle Unger led the Ram offense with four RBI with two hits and a run.

Pearl River’s Richie Masley had three runs, three hits and an RBI in the loss.

College Sports Notebook:

Nyack takes to the road for softball doubleheader

Coming off a conference split with Concordia College, the Nyack College softball will be in Wilmington, DE, today for a doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. against Goldey-Beacom College.

The Warriors salvaged a split against Concordia at the South Orangetown Little League Complex, posting a 4-0 victory after bowing, 5-2, in the opener.

Concordia opened a four-run lead after three innings in the first game, as only Jen Martino of Long Island and Meghan Richards of Nanuet drove in runs for Nyack. 

Chelsea Macaluso of Charlotte, NC, had a strong performance on the mound in the nightcap, limiting the Clippers offense to two hits while striking out seven batters in going the distance.

Macaluso, Richards, and Bethany Reed of Tiverton, RI, all had RBI in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead.

Tesla Murillo of Indio, CA, added two hits in the winning effort.

 

Jaspers sweep Gaels on diamond

Freshman standout starter Mike Scarinci of Nanuet pitched six solid innings as the Manhattan College baseball team defeated Iona College, 4-1, to complete a doubleheader sweep at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale.

The Jaspers (7-17, 3-2 MAAC) won the opener, 8-7, with sophomore Andrew Gorecki of Smithtown delivering the game-winning hit.

Junior catcher Ramon Ortega of Miami, FL, drove in four runs behind Scarinci as Iona fell to 9-17, 2-3 in the MAAC.

Scarinci, a Pearl River HS alum, lifted his record to 3-2 and lowered his staff-leading ERA to 3.48.

Manhattan takes on Army at West Point on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and hosts Niagara University on Friday at Van Cortlandt Park, also at 3 p.m.

Iona opens a three-game series in Loudonville on Friday at noon with a doubleheader against Siena College. The teams meet again on Saturday, also at noon.

 

Valiants Bring Home Conference Awards

Senior short stop Dan Fiorito and junior pitcher Alyssa Taylor each brought home conference awards for the Manhattanville Valiants this week.

won the Freedom Conference’s Player of the Week as the short stop went 11-18 with five home runs and eight RBI during the week. The Valiants dipped below .500 as they lost 10-0 to Alvernia last night, the team now stands at 8-9 on the year. 

Taylor was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the Valiant softball team as she went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA in four appearances last week. Taylor and the rest of the Valiants will head up to SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.

 

Mortarboard musings

  • Sophomore Katie Meyers of Pearl River is tied for the team lead in RBI on the St. Thomas Aquinas College softball team, which visits C.W. Post today at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader. Meyers and Megan Sweezy of East Islip, who is batting a team-high .300, each has driven in 15 runs. Junior Maura Power of Pearl River, is batting .258 with three RBI for the Spartans, who will also be on the road on Thursday to meet New York Institute of Technology in a 3 p.m. twin-bill. Power, an Albertus Magnus alumna, is 3-6 on the mound with a 5.00 ERA.
  • The Nyack College baseball team (10-8) is hosting Bloomfield (NJ) College today at noon at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, and then on Wednesday will travel to Pleasantville for a game against Pace University at 3 p.m. The Warriors have four players batting above .300: Phil Delisle of Quebec heads the list at .366, followed by J.D. Calabrese of Paramus, NJ, at .359, Tim Briggs of Flagstaff, AZ, at .353, and Juan-Pierre Crespo of Puerto Rico at .306. Delisle and Crespo share the team lead in RBI with 17, while Calabrese has 16.
  • John Fitzgerald of Yorktown has four goals and three assists for the Mercy College men’s lacrosse team, while freshman midfielder Anthony Accardi of Valley Cottage has seen action in six games. The Mavericks (4-3) travel to Albany for a game on Wednesday night at 7 against Saint Rose College (4-3). Chris DiFabio of Pleasantville, a freshman defenseman, has participated in three games, and freshman attack Jake Thorp of Yorktown Heights has three goals and one assist.
  • The Rockland Community College baseball team, coming off a 6-0 victory over Orange CC, welcomes ASA College of New York City to Suffern today at 4 p.m. Cory Lopez of Congers had two RBI against Orange CC. The Hawks stay at home on Thursday and Friday for 4 p.m. games against Ulster CC.
