Zebrowski Asks State For Congers Elementary Funding

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski said he is actively intervening on behalf of the now shuttered Congers Elementary School. He met with New York State Education Department (SED) officials recently and asked them to reconsider providing state aid for the repair of the school, which was closed in August for safety reasons. SED officials are expected to meet with Clarkstown administrators but no date has been released.

“As the Congers Elementary bond approaches, I am actively advocating for the State building aid reimbursement formula to apply,” said Zebrowski. “Although the State has raised concerns regarding excess classroom capacity, I have asked that they revisit this issue, sit down with local officials, and work towards a consensus.”

Clarkstown School Superintendent Dr. J. Thomas Morton could not be reached for comment on Zebrowski’s efforts because of today’s early school closure due to the snowstorm.

SED officials rejected the Clarkstown School District’s application for state funding in early January. The district has appealed that decision. Residents will be voting on a $6.5 million bond to repair and reconstruct part of the school on Tuesday, Feb. 4. If the bond is passed, residents will pay additional property taxes however that cost would be less if state aid were approved.

The Clarkstown school board will hold a community forum on Congers Elementary School during their Thursday 8 p.m. meeting at the district office in New City.

Zebrowski said when he meet with SED he pushed for the normal reimbursement percentage to be provided.

“I was assured after the meeting that the State would come down to Clarkstown immediately to discuss the project and their long-term plan," he said.
