State Names 12 Reward Schools in Rockland

South Orangetown Middle School and Upper Nyack Elementary were among 12 Reward Schools designated by the New York State Education Department for 2013-14.

The New York State Education Department named 12 Rockland County institutions among the 249 Reward Schools in the state as part of its School and District Designation Reports for 2013-14.

Reward Schools are chosen either for their progress from previous years or for having the highest levels of achievement in the sttate without significant gaps in student accomplishments. 

Six Clarkstown Central School District schools made the list, including Clarkstown North High School, Clarkstown South High School, Felix Festa Middle School, Laurel Plains Elementary School, Link Elementary School and Strawtown Elementry School.

The state also named Pearl River High School, Pearl River Middle School, South Orangetown Middle School, Nanuet High School, Upper Nyack Elementary School and Suffern High School as Reward Schools.

South Orangetown Middle made the list for the second consecutive year.

"I am very proud of the work we have done and the commitment of my staff to improve our programs and curriculum," South Orangetown Middle School Principal Karen Tesik said. "We know that we must continue to remain focused on improving our school in order to provide the best opportunities for our students."

Pearl River Superintendent Dr. John Morgano presented certificates recognizing the accomplishment to Pearl River High School Principal William Furdon and Pearl River Middle School Principal Maria Paese at the district's Superintendent's Conference Day last week.

"We are proud to receive this recognition from the NYS Education Department," Morgano said "It is through the collective efforts of our students, teachers, administration and parents that we are able to receive the Reward School status for our middle school and high school for the 2013-14 school year."
